In 2016, I sold my first ~$1 million home in Richfield, Ohio. The home was beautiful and the buyers were great to work with. Everything went smoothly. As a result of that sale, I earned a $47,000 commission – enough to pay off my student loans from John Carroll University! To this day, I still feel incredibly grateful for that first big transaction.
And it was a lot of work to sell, too! But despite putting in ten times the work as the luxury home, I made just $2,700.
It felt a little strange to have made so much on one sale and so little on another, but I figured it was just the way things worked.
That is, until it really started to really bother me. I couldn’t shake the feeling that traditional commission structures have a built-in double standard that rewards agents at the expense of homeowners.
The more time I spent in the industry, the more convinced I became that it wasn’t good business practice, either – not for my clients, not for my industry, and not for me.
I knew that I didn’t want to build my career chasing big commissions. I wanted to create a system where every homeowner, no matter the value of their home, got the right level of service and paid a fair price for it.
I wanted to build something that I would feel good about – not just for me, but for the people I was serving – our clients, employees, and my future generations..
I knew I wanted to do things differently, offering a flat-fee model instead of a traditional commission structure.
And the rest, you might say, is history.
